Continuando con nuestro viaje a Nueva York, después de haber comentado algunas de las cosas especiales para hacer en NYC y sobre la búsqueda de vuelos, ahora hablamos sobre los hoteles. Y del mismo modo que hicimos con los vuelos y Skyscanner, en este post mostraremos también como usamos Booking, la web y la aplicación móvil para reservar hoteles aprovechando muy buenas ofertas.
Continuing with our next trip to New York, after having talked about the special things to do in NYC and the searching of the flights, now we talk about the hotels. In a similar way that we did with the flights and Skyscanner, in this post we will show you how we use Booking, the website and the mobile application that we use to book the hotels taking advantage of very good deals.
Nuestra primera recomendación sobre Booking es que os creéis una cuenta de usuario. De este modo, cuando reservéis 5 hoteles pasaréis a ser automáticamente clientes Genius, y podréis disfrutar de un 10% de descuento en muchos hoteles y de ofertas secretas además de las ofertas diarias que salen regularmente.
Our first recommendation about Booking is that you must to create a user account. In this way, as soon as you book 5 hotels you will be automatically a Genius client and you will enjoy 10% of discount in many hotels and also secret offers in addition of the regular daily offers.
Para comenzar con la reserva solo hay que meter las fechas del viaje, el numero de personas por habitación y la ciudad, y te aparecerán un listado de posibilidades de hoteles. Se pueden filtrar los resultados por muchos parámetros diferentes que os serán de utilidad, como la zona exacta, precio por noche, estrellas y muchas otras cosas. También hay que intentar seleccionar, si es posible, que los precios que aparezcan sean totales o incluyendo todos los cargos e impuestos. En nuestro caso, queríamos quedarnos cerca de Times Square. Estuvimos también pensando en otros dos barrios, el Soho y Chelsea, pero en Times Square lo tienes todo cerca y es realmente el centro. Sobre el precio, queríamos que la media por noche no excediera los 250$ (también preferimos que Booking muestre los hoteles en la moneda local, el dolar en este caso) para hoteles de 3 ó 4 estrellas. Sabemos que es demasiado, pero los hoteles en NY son caros. Se pueden encontrar otras alternativas como apartamentos para alquilar unos días como estos o éste otro.
In order to begin with the reservation process, you only have to enter the dates of your trip, the number of people per room and the city, and you will see a list of possibilities to book. You can filter your results by many useful parameters, as the location/district, price per night, stars and others preferences. Also, it is better to select, if it is possible, that the prices displayed will be total including all the charges and taxes. In our case, we wanted to stay near Times Square. We considered also two other places, the Soho and Chelsea, but finally in Times Square you have most of the things closer and is the real city center. About the price, we wanted that the average per night were less than 250$ (we also prefer Booking shows the prices in the local currency, $ in this case) for a 3 or 4 stars hotel. We know it is too much, but the NY hotels are expensive. You can find other alternatives as apartments for rent like these or this other.
Una vez que filtras los resultados, Booking mostrará una lista ordenada según los que ellos recomiendan, en la que los hoteles con descuento Genius y otras ofertas se muestran al principio, y también aquellos hoteles que la gente más reserva y con mejor puntuación en los comentarios. Algunas veces preferimos ordenarlos solo por la mejor puntuación para saber cuales tienen las mejores opiniones. Esta es una parte muy útil de Booking, porque solo gente que de verdad ha estado en un hotel determinado puede comentar su experiencia allí. Para nosotros, una puntuación de 7.5 suele ser suficiente aunque siempre intentamos que sea mas de 8 ;-) Además es bueno leer detenidamente algunas de las opiniones (sobretodo las malas) para ver si toda la gente coincide en criticar una misma cosa, como la falta de limpieza o trato personal o mal servicio. Sin embargo, si son solo unas pocas personas las que han tenido una mala experiencia puede ser por un problema aislado que no tiene por qué repetirse.
Once you filter the results, Booking shows an ordered list, where the hotels with Genius discounts and other offers are shown firsts in the list, and also the ones more popular and with best score. Sometimes, we prefer to order the results by the review score to know which ones have better opinions. We think this is a very useful function of Booking, because only people that really stayed in a certain hotel can comment their experience there. For us, a score of 7.5 is enough, but prefer more than 8 ;-) Also it is good to read carefully the opinions (specifically the bad ones) to see if all the people agree in one issue, as bad cleanliness or bad staff. However, whether only few people have a bad experience, this could be an isolate problem.
Cuando tenemos seleccionados algunos hoteles que nos gustan, llega el momento de reservar y aquí hay que ser muy cuidadoso. Si quieres reservar sin compromiso, hay que buscar las tarifas que sean de Cancelación GRATUITA y os sugeriríamos también que las de PAGA DESPUÉS. Esto equivale a una reserva tradicional de hotel en la que se puede cancelar hasta uno o varos días antes sin coste (a veces será un día antes, pero otras te obligan a cancelar o modificar tu reserva con varios días de anterioridad, así que mira bien las Condiciones). Si no encuentras ninguna tarifa buena que sea PAGA DESPUÉS, aún puedes reservar una tarifa de Cancelación GRATUITA en la cual te cobrarían por adelantado una parte o toda la reserva y en caso de cancelación, te devolverían el dinero. Pero hay que estar atentos, porque a veces algunos hoteles son muy lentos en devolverlo. Por suerte, el servicio al cliente de Booking es excelente y los puedes llamar y ellos te lo gestionan todo hasta que te devuelvan el dinero. Por otro lado, si encuentras una oferta baratísima que no tenga cancelación gratuita y estás seguro de que vas a ir a ese hotel y asumir el riesgo de que si te pasa algo y no puedes ir, perderás el dinero, resérvala. Tiene algún riesgo pero a veces las ofertas merecen la pena!!
When we have some candidates that we like, it is time to reserve and here we need to be very careful. If you want to book without obligation, you have to search the FREE cancellation rate and we would suggest also the PAY LATER rate. This will be a traditional hotel booking where you can cancel until a certain time before (sometimes it would be 1 day before, but other they force to cancel or modify your reservation in advance, so take a look to the specific Conditions). If you don't find a good PAY LATER rate, you can still book a FREE cancellation rate where a percentage or the total of the reservation will be charged in your credit card in advance and in case of cancellation, they have to back your money. But take care of this, since some hotels are very slow to return you the money. Luckily, the Booking client service is very good and you can call them and they will manage this for you until the hotel back your money. Otherwise, if you find a very good deal that doesn't have free cancellation and you are sure that you are going to go to that hotel and take the risk that if something would happen to you and you cannot go finally you would loose the money, go ahead. It is risky but also it could be a very nice offer!!
Ahora, lo que nosotros hicimos para nuestro viaje a Nueva York. Como habíamos planeado el viaje con mucha antelación fuimos mirando Booking con bastante frecuencia, y cuando encontrábamos una buena oferta para algunos de los hoteles que nos gustaban los fuimos reservando con la tarifa de Cancelación GRATUITA - PAGA DESPUÉS. Una manera muy sencilla de hacer esto es crear una lista de favoritos con esos hoteles que te gustan, así cuando haces una nueva búsqueda se pueden mirar solo los hoteles de vuestra lista. Después de tener varios hoteles reservados, los miramos todos muy bien y los comparamos (también leímos los comentarios en TripAdvisor, la web de la que os hablaremos en un futuro). Otra web que usamos para comparar precios de hoteles donde ponen bastantes ofertas de otros buscadores (como Destinia o Expedia) es Trivago. En el caso de los hoteles en Nueva York encontramos precios mejores para algunos hoteles en Expedia. Os hablaremos sobre Trivago para nuestro viaje a Cuba. Así que con más de un mes de antelación (para que los hoteles que cancelábamos puedan reservar nuestra habitación a otra gente) ya nos decidimos por uno y cancelamos el resto. Aquí os dejamos un resumen de los que reservamos y con el que nos quedamos finalmente, el citizenM (todos ellos con ofertas de menos de 220$ la noche).
Now, what we did for our next trip to New York. As we planned this trip with many time in advance, we were checking Booking very often, and when we found a good deal for an hotel we liked it, we booked the FREE cancellation - PAY LATER rate. An easy way to do this is to create a favorite list with the hotels of a city what you like, then when you do a new search you look only the hotels in your list. After having some reservations, we looked them all and we compared them (also we read the reviews of those hotels in TripAdvisor, the website about we will talk in a future post). Other website we use to compare different prices of others searchers and companies (as Destinia or Expedia) is Trivago. In the case of the New York hotel we find better prices for some hotels in Expedia. We will talk about Trivago for our Travel to Cuba. Then, more than one month before (in order the cancelled hotels could book our room to other people) of the travel we choose one and cancelled the others. Here a summary of the hotels we booked and the one that we kept, the citizenM (all of them with offers of less than 220$ per night):
- CitizenM New York Times Square: Es un hotel muy moderno con habitaciones pequeñas pero con ventanas gigantes y camas extra grandes, y con WIFI gratuita. La localización es fantástica, sólo alguna calle por encima de Times Square y con varias entradas de metro muy cercanas. Y la puntuación en Booking es de 9!!
- CitizenM New York Times Square: This is a very modern hotel with small rooms but it has big windows and extra large beds, and free WiFi. The location is fantastic, just some street up of Times Square and with some subway entrances very close. And the Booking score is 9!!
- Royalton, A Morgans Original: Nos encantaba la decoración elegante de este hotel y de sus habitaciones. Pero incluso aunque la puntuación en Booking no era mala (8), muchos comentarios hablaban mal sobre que era todo muy oscuro, y algunas habitaciones no tenían ventana con luz y que no eran lo que parecían. Además la WiFi era de pago. Y aunque también estaba muy cerca de Times Square, tenía menos paradas de metro cercanas que el CitizenM.
- Royalton, A Morgans Original: We loved the elegant decoration of this hotel and the rooms. However, even although the Booking score was not bad (8), many reviews said that both the lobby and rooms were very dark, specially some rooms without views in the windows. Furthermore, the WiFi had an extra charge. And although it was also near of Times Square, it has less subway stops close respect to the CitizenM.
- Element Times Square West: Este es un hotel más funcional y económico pero con muy buenas revisiones y puntuación en Booking (8.4), y tiene WiFi y desayuno incluido!! Lo recomendamos para bolsillos más ajustados ya que se pueden encontrar muy buenas ofertas en él. La localización no es tan buena como la de los dos anteriores, pero está también cerca de Times Square.
- Element Times Square West: This is a more functional and cheaper hotel but with very good reviews and score in Booking (8.4), and it has WiFi and breakfast included! We recommend it if you find it in a good deal. The location is no so good as the two previous ones, but it is near also of Times Square.
- Blakely New York Hotel: La puntuación de este hotel en Booking es muy buena (8.6), tiene una muy buena relación calidad precio y además incluye el desayuno. Sin embargo, parece un poco antiguo (especialmente las habitaciones) y está un poco más lejos de Times Square.
- Blakely New York Hotel: The score of this hotel in Booking is very good (8.6) and it has a good value for money also with included breakfast. However, it seems a bit old (specially the rooms) and it is a bit more far away of Times Square.
- Grand Hyatt New York: Desde hace bastante tiempo este era el hotel con el que soñábamos, caso de volver a la ciudad, cada vez que pasábamos por delante camino a trabajar cada día cuando vivíamos en Nueva York. Pero después de leer muchos comentarios, parece que es un poco caro con respecto a la calidad que ofrecen ahora. La puntuación en Booking es solo de 7.7 y tiene bastantes críticas regulares. Además está en la Estación Central que no está demasiado cerca de Times Square. De todos modos, consideramos que si encuentras una buena oferta, debe ser un lugar excelente para quedarte en Nueva York.
- Grand Hyatt New York: Long time ago this was the hotel of our dreams, when we passed in front on it every day going to the work when we lived in New York. But after reading the reviews, it seems that it is expensive compared to the quality that they offer nowadays. The score in Booking is 7.7 and it has some reviews which are not very good. Also, it is in Central Station which is not so close of Times Square. Anyway, we consider that if you find a good offer here, it must be an excellent place to stay in New York.
De hecho, creemos que todos son muy recomendables y nos llevó bastante tiempo decidirnos, pero finalmente el CitizenM encaja mejor con el tipo moderno de viaje que queremos hacer y también preferíamos su localización exacta. Además en TripAdvisor lo consideran como el hotel número 19 entre los 464 hoteles de Nueva york. Así, que ya veremos!! Ya os comentaremos después de nuestro viaje. In fact, we think all of them are recommendable and we took many time in making the decision, but finally the CitizenM fits better with the modern style of our trip and we preferred also its specific location. Additionally, in TripAdvisor is considered the hotel number 19 between 464 hotels of New York. Well, let's see! We will review it after our trip.
